The Joint Commission’s Updated Identity Standards Drive Operational Excellence and Innovation in Healthcare

The Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization responsible for accrediting over 22,000 healthcare organizations across the US and globally, has recently updated their identity verification standards to improve access, operational efficiency and provider experience, ultimately enabling providers and health systems to focus on the patient care that they do best. Under these standards, healthcare organizations can now empower new clinical applicants to verify their identity digitally- Anytime, anywhere. This verification process can occur at any stage during the application process or upon joining a health system or other healthcare organization.

Previously, applicants were only permitted to travel in-person for identity proofing or complete a video visit where they would show either an organizational ID card or a valid picture ID issued by a state or federal agency (like a driver's license or passport). In both instances, healthcare organizations were required to leverage staff to manually conduct identity proofing. With this recent update, The Joint Commission is offering a faster and more secure way to verify at Identity Assurance Level 2 (IAL2), which opens up the door for automated verification technology.

CLEAR is well positioned to help health systems and organizations meet these new standards, offering real-time identity verification that is IAL2 and AAL2 certified. This allows applicants to more easily and quickly onboard compared to traditional verification methods, which can take up to 60 days and delay the healthcare applicant's ability to begin work. CLEAR prioritizes provider satisfaction by accelerating the onboarding process, while enhancing security and ensuring a seamless user experience. This not only speeds up verification but also sets a solid foundation for future interactions where identity verification is required, such as staff account creation, onboarding for electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) and account recovery. With CLEAR's connected identity, users simply verify once and use it over and over again across the ecosystem for a more seamless and secure experience.

The convergence of The Joint Commission's new standards with CLEAR's cutting-edge verification solutions heralds a new era for healthcare-characterized by heightened security measures and operational efficiency. By embracing these advancements, healthcare systems can chart a course towards a more secure and streamlined future.
