Auditor General DeFoor Celebrates National Intern Day; Highlights ‘Intern to Hire’ Career Pathway

HARRISBURG, PA - Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor today recognized the contributions of the Department's interns as part of National Intern Day.

"Our future is bright," Auditor General DeFoor said. "Our interns are on a career pathway to become the next generation of auditors through our Intern to Hire program. We are fortunate to have students representing the best the Commonwealth has to offer and who want to have a lasting impact on their communities."

While in Harrisburg, interns toured the Main Capitol Building and Treasury vault. They also had one-on-one mentoring sessions with full-time employees who were former interns within the department.

The Department's current interns are from 10 counties and attend Pennsylvania's state, state-related and private universities. They include:

  • Ian Beck from Lancaster, Lancaster County, who is serving in the Bureau of Information Technology Audits. He attends Kutztown University and majors in computer science.
  • Noah DiTullio from Clarion, Clarion County, who is serving in the Bureau of Municipal Pension Audits. He attends PennWest University - Clarion Campus and majors in finance.
  • Jack Dowling from Harrisburg, Dauphin County, who is serving in the Bureau of Fire Relief Audits. He attends Penn State University and majors in finance with a minor in economics.
  • Antonio Garcia from Mount Pocono, Monroe County, who is serving in the Bureau of Performance Audits. He attends East Stroudsburg University and majors in accounting.
  • Mark Leggin from Scranton, Lackawanna County, who is serving in the Bureau of County Audits, District Courts and Row Offices Division. He attends Lackawanna College and majors in accounting.
  • Hailley Lynch from Palmyra, Lebanon County, who is serving in the Bureau of Children and Youth Services, Tobacco Settlement Division. She attends Ursinus College and majors in applied economics.
  • Lindsay Mitchell from Altoona, Blair County, who is serving in the Bureau of State and Federal Audits. She attends Penn State University and majors in accounting.
  • David Otteson from Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, who is serving in the Bureau of County Audits, District Courts and Row Offices Division. He attends Penn State University - Harrisburg and majors in accounting.
  • Antonia Sunseri from Greensburg, Westmoreland County, who is serving in the Bureau of Fire Relief Audits. She recently graduated from Saint Vincent College, having majored in
  • Haley Sworen from Duryea, Luzerne County, who is serving in the Bureau of State and Federal Audits. She attends King's College and majors in finance and business administration.
  • Nicholas Vilogi-Slayton from Scranton, Lackawanna County, who is serving in the Bureau of Municipal Pension Audits. He attends Marywood University and majors in accounting and finance.

Since 2021, the Department of the Auditor General has worked to transform the department with updated equipment, risk-based auditing practices and new employment opportunities. The 'Intern to Hire Career Pathway' creates an opportunity for college students to gain auditing experience at the state-level and ultimately full-time employment at the department.

These internships are eligible for the department's Intern to Hire (I2H) program, which offers a flexible path from undergraduate internships to rewarding careers within the Department. Participants who successfully complete a three to six-month internship and have either an associate or bachelor's degree may be hired into a full-time position. To participate in the program, students must be:

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in an accredited college/university in a declared bachelor's degree program in accounting, business, data analytics, finance, economics, math, or a closely related field and successful completion of at least sixty (60) college credits at the time of the internship with a minimum 2.5 GPA; or
  • A recent graduate (within 6 months of the internship commencement) of an Associate degree program* at an accredited college/university with an area of concentration in accounting, business, data analytics, finance, economics, math, or a closely related field and a minimum 2.5 GPA; or
  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student in an accredited college/university in a declared master's or doctorate degree program in accounting, business, data analytics, finance, economics, math, or a closely related field and a minimum 2.5 GPA at the time of the internship; and
  • Someone who is passionate about their area of focus and public service, who is detail-oriented with curiosity and a desire to learn.

*Interns in the Bureau of Information Technology Audits, the Bureau of Performance Audits, and the Bureau of State and Federal Audits must be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program or higher at the start of the internship. Associate degree graduates are encouraged to apply for all other Bureau internship opportunities.
