GDOT Installing Stop Signs at Powerless Traffic Lights in East-Central Georgia

Augusta, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) began installing stop signs on Thursday at signalized intersections in District 2 (east-central Georgia) that are non-operational because of power loss.

We are adding stop signs at all non-operational signals on all state routes in District 2, including Columbia and Richmond Counties.

As of Thursday morning, 20 Georgia DOT maintained traffic lights don't have power across District 2, excluding Columbia and Richmond Counties. There are 64 traffic lights without power on state routes in Richmond County. Six traffic lights do not have power on state routes in Columbia County.

Georgia DOT continues to increase assistance to Richmond County. We now have eight signal crews working to repair signal heads across Augusta. District 2 is requesting additional signal crews from across the state. We are delivering at least 100 new signal heads to Richmond County today.

Debris is still wrapped up in power lines at five locations across District 2's state routes. However, we anticipate the utility companies will have all remaining conflicts resolved by the end of the day.

State Route 86 on the Laurens/Treutlen County line is now an extended closure. Crews discovered additional concerns and need to replace a culvert. The road has been closed because of a road washout.

Both rest areas on Interstate 20 in Columbia County are closed because of water and power issues. Georgia DOT is reopening the Georgia Welcome Center on Interstate 20 at the South Carolina state line and both rest areas on Interstate 16 in Laurens County, as water and power issues at those sites have been resolved.

We continue to ask drivers to use caution as several traffic lights across the district remain non-operational due to power loss. If you see a non-operational traffic light, Georgia law requires you to treat it like a stop sign. Please continue limiting all non-essential travel to help our Georgia DOT crews perform their work quicker and safer.
