Saratoga National Historical Park Hosts Special Events in August

Stillwater, N.Y. -Saratoga National Historical continues its special events season in August with the following offerings:

Natural History Walk
Thursday, August 1
9:00 am to 11:00 am
Visitor Center Parking Lot

Meet Biological Technician Linda White in the Visitor Center parking lot, then drive to Tour Stop 8 and begin the walk there. Explore a field of ferns, native plants and pollinators, old growth trees, glacial activity, and talk about the families that called these areas home.

Meet George Washington
Saturday, August 3
10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Schuyler House

General George Washington returns to the Schuyler House! At 1:00 pm, the Commander-in-Chief will discuss the state of the war as the calendar turns from 1776 to 1777. Saratoga Arts made this program possible through the Community Arts Regrant Program, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. This support was gained by the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield.

Meet in the Visitor Center

Looking for a more in-depth, hands-on experience during your visit? Join a Park Volunteer for a caravan-style tour of the Battlefield! Tours will last 2.5-3 hours. Meet in the Visitor Center and follow along in your own vehicle for as long as you like. May be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. The McKrells Concert

The McKrells will bring their rousing brand of Bluegrass to top of the hill next to the Visitor Center. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the exhilarating sounds along with the beautiful and historic views.Bluegrass Now magazine described our guests as follows: "Traditional suits-and-ties bluegrass The McKrells are not...Yes, it's Grass, mostly, but there's a lilt to the tunes, a bouncing drive to the melodies, and here and there a touch of melancholy that seems to go hand in hand with the Celtic folk persona." Stars Over Saratoga

Saratoga National Historical Park is hosting a Night Sky Viewing Party on August 10, from 9:30 to 10:30 pm. Join us for a night under the stars on the Visitor Center Lawn during the Perseid Meteor Shower. Ranger Kristin will give a short presentation about our connections to the night sky, a night sky tour, and how you can help to protect this disappearing resource. After the presentation, attendees will have time to watch the night sky for possible meteors. Although we have light pollution here, if the weather cooperates, we hope for a good show!

Songs of the Sea and Shore

You'll hear rousing chanteys, soulful ballads and laments, the traditions of the sea and shore, with lots of opportunity to sing along. Chris is a multi-instrumentalist who not only had a 20-year association as an Interpreter and Chanteyman at Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, but was privileged to sail and chantey on two historic vessels: the barque Picton Castle out of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, and the only wooden whaler left, the Charles W. Morgan out of Mystic, CT. Saratoga Arts made this program possible through the Community Arts Regrant Program, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. This support was gained by the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield.

Tinsmithing Demonstrations

A live tinsmith demonstration! At the time of the Battles of Saratoga, the tinsmith was an important part of both community and military life. Tinsmiths created dozens of useful items like cups, bowls, candle molds, lanterns, tea canisters, and other containers. They also provided armies with needed items such as oil flasks, canteens, document cases, cooking kettles, and even canister shot for artillery. Learn about the process and see a sampling of the many civilian and military wares a tinsmith could make! The tinsmith demonstration is weather sensitive and will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Motherhood in the 18th Century

Neilson House, Tour Stop 2

Living Historian Anne Clothier joins us to explore motherhood in the 18th century! Discover how the experiences of mothers have changed and how it has remained the same throughout the past 250 years. Examine original artifacts and quality replicas as you hear about how women approached pregnancy and childbirth and cared for their children through daunting illnesses. Learn how attitudes toward children evolved through the last half of the eighteenth century and discover the ways in which women's roles changed.

Movie Night

Join us for Saratoga NHP's first ever Movie Night! Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy Sweet Liberty, a light-hearted American Revolution-themed comedy featuring Alan Alda, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Michael Caine. Rated PG, running time 1 hour and 46 minutes. Event will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

Fort Ticonderoga Fife & Drum Corps

Listen to stirring tunes that eased the drudgery of a long march, or the many calls that regulated activity in a fort. Explore how drumbeats, trilling fifes, and songs created an 18th-century world of military music.
