Coastal Defence Work Begins at Llandudno's North Shore

Work is starting this week on coastal defence improvements at Llandudno's North Shore, near the paddling pool and RNLI station.

The work, focussed on improving existing defences and adding new sections of defence, is part of a wider scheme for the town, which began at West Shore in July this year.

Funded by Welsh Government, the scheme addresses the present day flood risk to the town. Coastal modelling work shows that up to 4,982 residential properties and 1,056 commercial properties in Llandudno are at risk of coastal flooding in the next 50 years.

At North Shore, contractors will repair and replace floodgates and add a new floodgate across the entrance to the RNLI lifeboat station. A new wall behind the paddling pool will replace existing concrete bollards and chains, with an additional new seawall along the back of the footpath east of the lifeboat station.

During the work, the footpath and parking will be closed on the seaward side of Colwyn Road, from near the RNLI to Ffynnon Sadwrn Lane. The work is scheduled to finish before Easter 2025.

Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Cabinet Member for Environment, Roads and Facilities - Infrastructure, said: "This coastal defence scheme involves improvements at North Shore and West Shore. We're improving the current defence system at known weak points, and addressing the risk of existing defences being outflanked during storms. This will provide a more reliable and consistent standard of protection for Llandudno, with residents and businesses benefitting from this investment in reducing flood risk."
