Ooma AirDial call alerts make it easier for facilities managers to respond to emergencies

Imagine:

  • A student walking to their dorm hears a cry for help and activates a campus blue-light safety phone to summon a security officer.
  • Sparks from a wildfire land on the roof of a closed manufacturing plant creating a smoldering fire that sets off a fire alarm system.
  • It's 2 a.m. and an apartment complex resident gets stuck between floors and uses the elevator phone to ring for help.

All of these scenarios highlight the need for a speedy and reliable way to call for help. Traditionally, these calls have been made through what we in the telecom business call POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), the copper-wired phone lines that are slowly, but surely, going away.

POTS replacement option

Fortunately, Ooma AirDialĀ®-a POTS line replacement solution-has been helping businesses keep their POTS devices up-and-running through a digital (internet) connection since 2022. And AirDial is continually being updated with features that make this affordable and reliable solution even more valuable.

One of the latest upgrades is emergency notifications-the ability to send up to 10 call alerts in the form of an email or SMS text. For example, if a person trapped in the elevator makes a call for help, emails and text messages can simultaneously be sent to the elevator maintenance manager, property owner, receptionist, building custodian and security guard. Ten emergency notifications greatly improve the odds that someone will arrive quickly to rescue the resident before panic sets in.

Since the beginning of AirDial, we've always viewed it as an opportunity to deliver an advanced service that's not only far superior to POTS, but costs much less. Call alerts are a perfect example. Copper-wire phone lines simply can't provide anything like this powerful notification that increases both management awareness and safety.

Remote Device Management web portal

What makes Call Alerts even better is its convenience. Business administrators can easily add, edit or remove the contact information through AirDial's Remote Device Management web portal. Say your security guard retires. With a few keystrokes, the administrator can access the portal and add the email and phone number for the new security guard so they'll now get the call notifications. No need to spoil the wrong person's peaceful fishing trip with emergency text alerts.
