10 Must-Dos During Your First Year in College

Ah, the first year of college. A glorious time of newfound independence and endless possibilities. While your first year might feel intimidating, fear not, because we've compiled a list of 10 must-dos to make your first year unforgettable.

1. Establish Healthy Habits

Listen up: you are a magnificent, multi-faceted being, and that means establishing healthy habits in all areas of your life to take care of your mental, emotional, physical and academic well-being. Get enough sleep (seriously, ditch the all-nighters whenever possible), eat halfway decent food (ramen can only take you so far) and don't be afraid to ask for help if you're feeling overwhelmed. Remember, a healthy you is a happy you, and a happy you is much better at acing exams.

2. Make New Friends

We know, we know-super cliché, but trust us, making new friends is the secret sauce to a memorable college experience. These are the people who will laugh with you, cry with you and probably witness some of your most memorable college moments. So put yourself out there and strike up conversations with new people. Your future BFF could be lurking anywhere!

3. Host a Get-Together

Those new friends we just talked about-invite them over or go out on the town. Hosting a get-together is a fantastic way to bond with your friends and create lasting memories. Game night, a dinner party, movie night or Friendsgiving-pick something and run with it! Be kind to your neighbors, keep the noise down and remember... pics or it didn't happen.

4. Check Your Email

Most of you probably aren't in the habit of checking emails weekly, much less daily. But guess what? Your university and professors will use email to communicate important information, due dates and deadlines. So, we're begging you... get into the habit of checking your inbox regularly.

5. Go to Homecoming

Homecoming isn't just about sports; it's a whole vibe. If you love sports, fantastic! If you don't, that's OK too. Grab your friends, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow schoolmates. It's a great way to connect with your new community.

6. Get Involved

College is your chance to explore new interests, so do more than just hit the books. Join an intramural team, club, or meet-up group, find a charity or organization to volunteer at, or check out Greek life and student government. There are endless possibilities! Getting involved in extracurricular activities not only enriches your college experience but also helps you meet people with similar interests.

7. Make Use of School Resources

A college campus is a treasure trove of personal and academic support. Feeling lost in a class? Hit the tutoring center. Professor leaving you scratching your head? Visit them during office hours. Feeling overwhelmed and struggling to stay positive? The counseling center has got you. Your university has loads of resources to help you succeed, so don't be shy about taking advantage of them. Your future self will thank you when finals roll around.

8. Check Out Jobs on Campus

Who doesn't like a little extra spending money? Look on campus for opportunities to earn some cash or reduce the cost of tuition-whether you're looking to snag an internship, a work-study gig or even a part-time job. Earning your own cash looks great on a resume and gives you that sweet sense of financial independence. Not only can these opportunities help you financially, but they also provide valuable work experience and an opportunity to network and maybe even find a mentor.

9. Take Advantage of Freebies and Discounts

Take advantage of the perks of being a college student… literally. Movie nights on campus, live performances like concerts and plays, and so many different athletic games-many schools offer free admission to students. Also, don't be shy about flashing your student ID around town, as many businesses offer special savings just for students. All of these are great ways to have fun without breaking the bank.

10. Call your Family

We can hear your eyes rolling from here. But for real, just call them. They miss you, and those calls can be a comforting slice of home amidst the chaos of college life. We know you're busy conquering the world, but a quick phone call can make a world of difference. Plus, they might send you care packages filled with your favorite snacks (and maybe some emergency cash-we won't judge).

So, there you have it-10 things to do during your first year in college. Embrace the experience, make the most of every opportunity and most importantly, have fun! Welcome to some of the best years of your life.
