Anne N. Junod, a senior research associate in the Climate and Communities practice area at the Urban Institute, testified before the Chicago City Council Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Rights on July 2, 2024, on how to support effective, welcoming, and equitable climate migration coordination, planning, and policy. In her testimony, she summarizes key findings from five Urban-led studies on community and institutional impacts and capacity in climate migrant-receiving communities. She concludes with three recommendations for the committee: coordinating local climate planning with immigration and refugee experts and advocates, developing planning and policy frameworks for "fast" and "slow" climate migration, and institutionalizing learnings and relationships with receiving communities in southern states that are already experiencing climate migration.
