Alvernia extends Fitzgerald

Board of Trustees extend university president's contract through 2029

The Alvernia University Board of Trustees votes to extend the contract of President Glynis A. Fitzgerald, Ph.D., through 2029, ensuring her continued leadership as the university advances its mission and strategic goals as a comprehensive regional university.

"Since stepping into the role of president, Dr. Fitzgerald has strengthened Alvernia's academic offerings, expanded its community partnerships, and elevated its position as a regional hub for innovation," said Alvernia Board of Trustees Chairperson Gregory J. Shemanski. "The Board is confident in her ability to lead Alvernia through its next chapter of growth, and we are excited to continue working with her to provide transformative educational experiences for our students."

Dr. Fitzgerald, who began her tenure as Alvernia's seventh president in July 2023, has played a pivotal role in the university's ongoing success. Under her leadership, Alvernia has expanded its experiential learning opportunities, strengthened community engagement through its CollegeTowne initiative, and enhanced student success programs. Her leadership has also helped the university navigate challenges in the higher education landscape with a commitment to academic excellence and financial sustainability.

"I am deeply honored by the trust and confidence that the Board of Trustees has placed in me to lead Alvernia through this exciting time in the university's history," said President Fitzgerald. "Together, we will continue to build on our Franciscan values, advance our mission, and foster an environment where all students thrive."

In addition to her work at Alvernia, Dr. Fitzgerald has a distinguished career in higher education, having served as provost and senior vice president at Alvernia prior to her presidency and holding leadership roles at Central Connecticut State University. She is a respected scholar and an advocate for inclusive excellence in higher education.

"I have the utmost respect and admiration for Dr. Fitzgerald as she continues to lead Alvernia University with vision, innovation, collaboration, and integrity into the future bursting with promise and rooted in a rich legacy of Franciscan values," said Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Congregational Minister Sr. John Ann Proach, OSF.

Fitzgerald's leadership extends deeply into the community and beyond. She sits on the Central PA Advisory Board and the Corporate Marketing Committee of Caron Treatment Centers. She is the Vice Chair of the Reading Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors.
