NORTH MYRTLE BEACH WOMAN CHARGED WITH TAX EVASION, FAILING TO FILE STATE TAX RETURNS

SCDOR agents arrested a North Myrtle Beach woman on Friday and charged her with failing to file South Carolina Income Tax returns and tax evasion.

Jennifer Lyn Josey, 54, of North Myrtle Beach, is charged with six counts of failing to file state Income Tax returns and pay taxes; and one count of tax evasion.

Josey had state taxable income totaling $3.9 million for tax years 2017-2023, according to arrest warrants. In tax year 2020, Josey reported taxable income of $220,760 when an investigation showed her actual taxable income was more than $431,000. She is alleged to have claimed deductions, expenses, and a business loss to which she was not entitled.

The warrants allege that Josey evaded $9,470 in taxes. Overall, she owes $144,954.

If convicted, Josey faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 for each count of failing to file returns and pay taxes; and five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 for the tax evasion charge. She is being held in the J. Ruben Long Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply.
