Helping Kids Thrive Online: Health, Safety, & Privacy

On May 23, 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a new interagency Task Force to advance the health, safety, and privacy of youth online, as well as identify measures and methods for addressing the adverse health effects minors experience while using online platforms.

The Task Force has been led in partnership by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Department of Commerce, through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

The Task Force was tasked with:

  1. helping parents and caregivers protect the health, safety, and privacy of their children who use online platforms,
  2. developing recommended practices on health, safety, and privacy-by-design for use by industry providers of online products and services, and
  3. identifying the risks to, and benefits for, youth who use online media and recommending a research agenda to better document these effects.
