Senator Hassan Statement on Two-Year Anniversary Since Supreme Court Overturned Roe v. Wade and Took Away a Woman’s Fundamental Freedom

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) released the following statement on the two-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Dobbs v. Jackson case, which overturned Roe v. Wade and took away a woman's fundamental freedom of making her own personal life and health care decisions:

"Two years ago, Supreme Court justices appointed by former President Trump took away a fundamental freedom from millions of Americans by overturning Roe v. Wade. Since then, there has been a concerted effort to ban abortions across the country, including in New Hampshire. Tens of millions of American women now live in states where abortion is banned. Some of these bans could send to jail women who seek an abortion and the doctors who provide critical care to them. Unfortunately, we know that the efforts to deny a woman's fundamental freedom to make her own life decisions and tend to her own health won't stop there.

"This is a perilous moment. What is at stake is whether women are free and equal citizens in the United States of America, and whether our country will stand firmly behind the Declaration of Independence's promise that we are all created equal. The question for Americans today is whether that promise extends to women as well as men; whether our daughters in fact will have the same right that our sons have to make critical, personal health care and life decisions. The world's greatest democracy cannot let the women of America become second-class citizens, and I will continue to fight in this moment and beyond too to safeguard freedom for America's women."
