IKEA U.S. reveals redesigned LGBTQ+ Center at Howard University Homecoming

Supporting inclusivity and empowerment with democratic design

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 16, 2024 - As part of the ongoing commitment to inclusivity and equality, IKEA U.S. is proud to announce the unveiling of the newly redesigned Intercultural Affairs & LGBTQAI+ Resource Room at Howard University. The ribbon cutting will take place during the university's historic Homecoming Week (October 13-20) and the contribution will be highlighted at the Lavender Gala on October 16th, a celebration of pride, resilience, and community for the Howard student body.

The Lavender Gala, held annually, is a marquee event that honors the achievements and contributions of LGBTQIA+ students and allies. This year, IKEA helps to bring the celebration to a new level, highlighting the importance of creating safe, welcoming, and functional spaces for students to thrive.

"At IKEA, we believe in creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued," said Ciannie Rodriguez, Equality, Diversity, & Inclusion Manager of IKEA U.S. "Our collaboration with Howard University reflects our commitment to fostering inclusive environments and supporting the next generation of leaders."

The redesigned resource room features key IKEA products known for their functionality and style, including the BESTÅ storage units, KALLAX shelving, and BOAXEL wall-mounted systems, providing versatile solutions for organizing and personalizing the space. The GRÖNFJÄLL seating and BORGHAMN handles add comfort and character, creating a space that is both practical and inviting.

Beyond Howard University, the impact of IKEA in the D.C. community extends through initiatives such as the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC), where IKEA is providing interior design services and furnishings for three youth centers. One of these centers, Stages, offers a safe space for youth who have been displaced after coming out to their families, reinforcing the commitment to supporting and uplifting all communities.
