The Boston Police Department Remembers the Service and Sacrifice of Sergeant Edward Q. Butters Who Died in the Line of Duty 95 Years Ago

BPD Remembers: On Wednesday, August 14, 1929, Sergeant Edward Butters died while protecting and serving the citizens of Boston after succumbing to injuries sustained after he was thrown from a department vehicle while on duty.

Sergeant Butters, who was 61 years old at the time of his death, had been employed with the Boston Police Department for 38 years. Sergeant Butters was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, MA.

His name is located at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. on Panel 12, East Line 5. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.

In Boston, a Hero Sign has been placed in his honor at Blue Hill Avenue on District B-3 (Mattapan). The sign is to forever honor the memory of a man who gave his life in service to his city.
