Fayette County Voters Should Avoid Election Scams

The PA Department of State and Fayette County Election Bureau want voters to be aware of several scams targeting constituents ahead of the 2024 General Election.

Uniontown, PA- As thousands of Fayette County voters prepare to head to the polls in November, election officials hope none will fall prey to various election scams happening across the state.

Fayette County Election Bureau Director Marybeth Kuznik said her office has received numerous calls about "internet sites, podcasts and TV programs" spreading "misinformation" that constituents can "vote early" by visiting the bureau.

"We do not have early voting in Pennsylvania," Kuznik said. "We do have a short period of in-person mail-in and absentee voting, when voters may come into the election bureau, request their mail-in or absentee ballot, and vote in the office."

That option for mail-in and absentee voting begins after ballots are prepared - in October (date to be determined) - and ends at 5 p.m. Oct. 29.

"This method is still voting by mail-in/absentee ballot and not true early voting," Kuznik said.

The Pennsylvania Department of State also alerted the election bureau to a statewide scam in which voters are receiving text messages about "a problem with their registration." The elaborate scam also includes a clickable hyperlink that asks voters to "update their voter status."

"Do not click or you may get malware," Kuznik said. "Neither Fayette County nor the Department of State will ever notify you about any voter registration problems via text message."

The Fayette County Election Bureau is also seeking paid poll workers for the Nov. 5 Presidential Election. Applicants must be registered to vote in Fayette County or students (age 17) with permission from both the school district and a parent/guardian.

New poll workers are required to attend at least one, three-hour training session to be eligible for appointment on Election Day. Anyone interested in becoming a poll worker should call the Fayette County Election Bureau at 724-430-1289.

The last day to register to vote in the November 2024, General Election is Oct. 21; and the last day to apply for a mail-in or civilian absentee ballot is 5 p.m. Oct. 29.

All mail-in and absentee ballots must be received at the Fayette County Election Bureau by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Polls are open for in-person voting from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 5.

The election bureau is located in the Gallatin Building at 2 West Main St. in Uniontown. For more information, visit www.fayettecountypa.org/230/Election-Bureau.
