Dear members of the Temple community,
While I am still new to Temple, I am keenly aware of this university's strong tradition of active civic engagement and voting. That is why Temple was recently recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge with the Highly Established Action Plan Seal, which demonstrates Temple's commitment to nonpartisan democratic engagement. Congratulations to all involved who played a role in earning such an important distinction.
As you know, tomorrow is an historic election. A significant number of you have already cast your votes by mail. Many others will head to the polls on Tuesday to ensure your voices are heard. If you have not done so already, I encourage every member of the Temple community to take part in this critically important activity tomorrow. Voting is one of the most significant ways that we as Americans can actively participate in our democracy. Regardless of who you cast your ballot for, the most important thing is that you exercise your right to cast it.
As we have seen with past elections, it might take some time before a winner is ultimately declared. When the results are final, they will affect members of our community in many different ways.
In the wake of the election, it is my hope and expectation that we all will demonstrate both civility and respect for each other. Temple is a richly diverse community that is home to approximately 40,000 students, faculty and staff, who have any number of viewpoints and political opinions. We are at our best when we listen and learn from each other, and when we engage in constructive dialogue. This is the essence of a university's purpose. I ask that we all remember that we can disagree without being disagreeable.
Our Temple Votes initiative has several post-election resources available for any student, faculty or staff member who may need support over the next several days.
I want to again thank all members of the Temple community for taking the time to participate in this important part of the democratic process.
Warm regards,
John Fry
President
