COSATU welcomes the appointment of Chief Justice Mandisa Maya

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) congratulates Justice Mandisa Maya on her appointment as Chief Justice of South Africa.

The first woman to be appointed in the position, Justice Maya will assume the role on 1 September after incumbent Chief Justice Raymond Zondo's term comes to an end on 1 August.

President Cyril Ramaphosa informed Justice Zondo in February this year of his intention to appoint Justice Maya, but in the interest of transparency he consulted the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the leaders of political parties in the National Assembly. After interviewing her, the JSC recommended her appointment to the President.

It wasn't the first time the JSC had put Maya forward for the position. She was the JSC's favoured candidate when Justice Zondo was appointed by President Ramaphosa.

Justice Maya's qualifications and judicial record, leadership qualities, experience as a judge in different courts, her leadership of the Supreme Court of Appeal along with her role as Deputy Chief Justice make her a fitting choice.

This appointment is a moment to celebrate. South Africa has travelled far from the dark days when the role of women was confined to domestic or low paying jobs. Today we are recognised internationally as a leading light in championing the rights of women and their advancement at all levels. We are proud of the strides we have made as a nation on this front under the leadership of the African National Congress led Alliance and COSATU since 1994.

COSATU wishes Justice Maya well and pledges its support, and though she is the first woman Chief Justice we are confident she will not be the last.
