If you like helping others, consider joining the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center team.

The application period for the next training academy takes place Sept. 30 through Oct. 20. The 12 to 14-week academy is scheduled to start on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025. The application form is available now.

After applications have been reviewed, qualified candidates will be invited to an employment skills test. The test uses the CritiCall software, which measures several job‐related skills. They include data entry, typing speed and accuracy, spelling, and reading comprehension, along with several others.

If the applicant receives a passing score on the test, they will have a virtual interview with a panel (November 2024). The candidates who receive a recommendation from the panel and will move on to a psychological evaluation. They will also need to pass a criminal background check, drug test and physical.

Basic Training to Become a Call Taker or Telecommunicator

During the academy, participants receive basic training and will acquire the certifications needed to become a call taker or a telecommunicator. Trainees will receive a salary during training, please see below the starting salary for each position.

Annual Salary:
Call Taker- $45,323
Telecommunicator-$47,507

The basic job duties include answering incoming emergency (911), non‐emergency, and administrative calls. Responsibilities include obtaining needed information from the callers and entering that data into a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.

The Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center provides 911 services to a general population of more than 1.19 million people.
