Sacramento art project brings climate action to life through community collaboration

A community art project aimed at promoting climate action is set to be unveiled at the Hagginwood Community Center (3271 Marysville Blvd) on Sept. 13.

The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability-under guidance by local artist in residence Taner Pasamehmetoglu-collaborated with community members on an abstract painting that highlights the collective effort needed for sustainability.

Using cool-colored, upcycled paints to symbolize actions that reduce heat and emissions, the "Make Your Mark" painting represents rapid extreme heat rise in Sacramento. It empowers communities to come together to tackle climate challenges.

Around 100 community members got involved in creating "Make Your Mark" at three events starting at the ECOS Earth Day celebration and included an event at the Hagginwood Community Center.

"Community is integral to both art and sustainability, so having this piece displayed at Hagginwood-where part of it was created with the help of community members-means the world to me," Pasamehmetoglu said.

The unveiling will take place at 3:30 p.m. with the artist and staff from the Office of Arts and Culture and the Office of Climate Action and Sustainability. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP using this form, although registration is not required to attend.

"Make Your Mark connected community members to large issues like extreme heat and climate action by turning these into something people can see and feel," said the City's Sustainability Analyst Sarah Kolarik. "Our hope is that we've inspired people to engage and take action as a community."

Pasamehmetoglu was part of the Capital Region Creative Corps program, managed by the City's Office of Arts and Culture and funded by a grant from the California Arts Council.
