Council reorganizes as community bids farewell to Dave Druker

The City Council reorganized on Dec. 9 with Terry Gaasterland appointed to the mayor's post, Tracy Martinez rotating to the deputy mayor's seat and newly-elected Councilmember John Spelich taking the oath of office.

The selections of mayor and deputy mayor for 2025 followed the City Council's traditional practice of placing the top two vote-getters from the previous election cycle into the positions.

In addition to Spelich, Martinez and Councilmember Dan Quirk also received certificates of election and were sworn in to new, four-year terms. The three ran unopposed in the November election.

The meeting was the last for Mayor Dave Druker, who has served five terms totaling 20 years on the council and five rotations as mayor of Del Mar. Druker holds the record for longest-serving councilmember and for having served the most times as mayor.

During and after the meeting, appreciation and official recognitions for Druker poured in, including proclamations and resolutions of appreciation from county, state and federal representatives.
