Press release
I condemn the killing of Alejandro Alfredo Martínez Noguez and call for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Journalists play a vital role in uncovering crime and wrongdoing, and effective protection mechanisms must be put in place to ensure their safety.
Alejandro Alfredo Martínez Noguez founded the online media El Hijo del Llanero Solititito, where he reported on criminal activity in the city of Celaya. He was reportedly on assignment and travelling in a vehicle escorted by police when he was shot dead by unidentified individuals. He had already survived an assassination attempt two years earlier and had been under police protection since January 2023.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journaliststhrough global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Actionon the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
