Mayor Perry – listening to Croydon

October is Black History Month, which promises to be a month of reflection and celebration, as we come together as a community to recognise the rich African and Caribbean history and culture in Croydon. This year's events are centred around the theme, 'Reclaiming Narratives', highlighting the importance of correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the success stories of Black heritage. I was delighted to attend the launch event on Wednesday where we enjoyed uplifting music from gospel singers and steel pan performers. Croydon Council's Race Equality Network also shared insights into our work on racial equality and celebrating the contributions of the Black community. Everyone is invited to the full programme of events on offer by the council and our partners, including Croydon BME Forum.

Working together on homelessness

Homelessness and rough sleeping are growing, complex problems - both nationwide and across London. No one should have to worry about having a roof above their head - this is why we are committed to helping people off the streets and safely into homes as part of our new Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2024-2029. Working with our partners across the health and voluntary sector to support residents into sustainable accommodation, is a critical part of this work. So I'm pleased to share that we have set up a new homelessness and rough sleeping board, made up of local partners, so that we can work together to tackle the causes of long-term rough sleeping.

New library model

The first stage of setting up a new library model is now under way. We are speaking with community groups interested in taking on one of the four buildings where library services are being withdrawn. Anyone interested is invited to join a viewing session to look around the buildings and ask any questions. More details will be available soon on the council website, or in the meantime you can email: [email protected]. We will start contacting residents impacted by the changes so they can transfer their library accounts to their next nearest library. We will also share details on the home library service, digital collections and details of the weekly accessible bus shuttle service, so that everyone continues to have access to our library services.

Nigeria Independence Day

The rain did not dampen spirits when dozens of residents and council staff members came together on Nigeria Independence Day to see the flag raised outside the Town Hall and join in a rousing and joyful rendition of the Nigerian national anthem.

Have a good weekend.
