Youth Month launched in Grand Bahama

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture officially launched Youth Month on the island of Grand Bahama on September 30, 2024, under the inspiring theme "Homecoming: Let's Make More Memories." This month-long celebration is dedicated to engaging the island's youth through a variety of exciting activities designed to foster empowerment, creativity, and community involvement.

The launch event featured representatives, including, Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama, Kingsley Smith and Deputy Director of Sports, Norris Bain.
Bain emphasised the government's commitment to prioritising youth development -- stating, "Our young people are our most precious resource" -- and highlighting the ongoing investments made by the Bahamas Government in support of youth initiatives across the nation.

Minister Moxey reinforced the importance of youth as agents of change, embodying values of empowerment and social justice. She remarked, "Youth Month is a reminder of the critical importance of our young people in shaping the future of our nation. It is our responsibility to address their concerns and provide opportunities that enhance their development."

She highlighted various initiatives aimed at integrating young Grand Bahamians into the economy, including programs like Maritime 101, a collaboration with ELNET Maritime Agency, in which 60 students from 17 high schools have graduated, on the island of Grand Bahama.

Kicking off Youth Month is the "Miracle in Music Youth Explosion," scheduled for Friday, October 4, at the Susan J. Wallace Center. Following this, a church service will take place on Sunday, October 6, at the New Life Worship Center.

The month will also include the Youth Recognition Awards on October 12 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, a Youth Speech Competition on October 16, where prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and a grand Youth March & Rally on October 20 at Independence Park, concluding with a Junkanoo Rush.

Additionally, while the month will wrap up with a Career Fair at Grand Lucayan on October 31, 'Youth in Parliament' will be held in Nassau on November 4, providing young leaders with a platform to voice their concerns and ideas.

Bain noted the significant contributions of youth coordinators, who have been assisting to ensure a successful Youth Month, led by the Former Deputy Director of Education, Mr. Cecil Thompson: "As we celebrate this vibrant month, let us unite to recognize the achievements of our youth and empower them to be the change-makers of tomorrow. Youth Month is not just an occasion; it's a commitment to investing in our future and fostering a community where young voices are heard and valued."
