Gresham Police conducting pedestrian safety mission

The Gresham Police Department conducted a pedestrian safety mission on September 18, near NE Halsey Street and NE 172nd Avenue. Officers used education and enforcement actions to increase safety awareness for drivers and pedestrians.

With children returning to school, drivers should expect to see additional pedestrian traffic on our roadways, particularly near local schools. Education for drivers and pedestrians is vital to keeping our roads safe. Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross, or who are in the process of crossing, the roadway. Motorists are also required to stop at all crosswalks when a vehicle is already stopped in a lane next to the one they are traveling in.

Funding for this pedestrian safety operation is made possible through a grant from Oregon Impact and Oregon's Department of Transportation.
