Tarleton Soccer draws against UTRGV in home opener

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - In front of a loud and full crowd on Tuesday night, the Tarleton State Texan soccer program opened their home slate with a 1-1 draw against UTRGV.
In an environment nearly 1700 fans, the Texan Soccer Complex was a tough place for the Vaqueros to play. The fans loudly and proudly supported their Texans making it an exciting night to play soccer.

With the draw the Texans (0-0-3) have the started out the season with three consecutive draws for the first time as a program. UTRGV heads back to Edinburg, 0-1-1.

The Texans struck first in the first half via the foot of freshman Baires. After a Texan shot attempt, Vaqueros keeper Heiddis Emma Sigurdadottir attempted to clear it out of the attacking area. But, Baires had other ideas intercepting the attempt and firing back the keeper to find the back of the net.
Purple and White took their first halftime lead of the season, leading the Vaqueros, 1-0 after the first 45 minutes of action. Tarleton dominate the half out-shooting UTRGV, 7-4, and 3-0 on the goal.
UTRGV didn't take long to respond after the break. The Vaqueros squeaked a goal past the Texans in the 50th minute. After a quick pass from Rubi Ortiz Savannah Frisby pushed a roller past into the left side of the net to even the score at one apiece.
In the 67th minute, the Texan defense fought hard to keep the 1-1 tie. After the Vaqueros brought the ball in the attacking third, the ball skidded feet from the goal before the Texans were able to cover it up and thwart the scoring threat.
Kendall kept the game tied on a diving saves, knocking the ball away from the corner of the goal with her fingertips. After a long cross, Kendall dove to the right corner and kept the game tied at one in the 73rd minute.
Neither team was able to push together a scoring threat, ending in a 1-1 tie. The Texans out-shot the Vaqueros, 12-11. Tarleton also held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. UTRGV took seven corner kicks to Tarleton State's 4.
Tarleton will continue their three-game homestand on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Tarleton Soccer Complex. For the first time in the regular season, the Texans will host a power four conference opponent with the Houston Cougars coming to Stephenville for a Sunday matinee contest at 1 p.m.
