Talks of Poland’s and Germany’s top diplomats

The head of Poland's diplomacy stressed that resuming regular meetings of the governments, along with establishing a new mechanism of foreign and defence ministers' joint meetings, symbolises a new chapter in both countries' relations and shows Warsaw's and Berlin's willingness to extensively cooperate. Today's meeting was devoted to reviewing items on the bilateral agenda, discussing new initiatives as part of Poland-Germany and European relations, and planning next consultations. The delegations also spoke about the German government's new proposals concerning our common history and the challenges highlighted by the Polish community in Germany.

Moreover, the ministers addressed Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Radosław Sikorski and Annalena Baerbock talked about the need for continued political and military support for Kyiv and the country's post-war reconstruction. They also exchanged views on the possible support for Ukraine's European aspirations. The officials agreed that the EU's capability to extend sanctions regimes and to ensure greater effectiveness of their implementation is an important tool to exert pressure on Russia.

Poland's and Germany's chiefs of diplomacies also raised the topics of security and defence, in particular the preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Washington. The ministers also agreed that many issues crucial to the EU's future and to European security can be tackled under the Weimar Triangle.

In the context of today's intergovernmental consultations, separate talks were held between Prof. Krzysztof Ruchniewicz, newly appointed as Plenipotentiary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Polish-German social and cross-border cooperation, and his German counterpart MP Dietmar Nietan, Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation.
