Birkbeck announces Professor Lucy Mazdon as its first Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation)

The role will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of Birkbeck's research strategy and knowledge exchange framework.

Birkbeck, University of London is pleased to announce that Professor Lucy Mazdon has been appointed as its first Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation). She will take up her post in mid-February 2025.

Lucy is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor for Recruitment and Partnerships at Oxford Brookes University, a role she took up in September, from the post of Pro Vice-Chancellor International Students and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

She has over 20 years of experience in higher education management and leadership roles encompassing research, education, knowledge exchange and enterprise.

Prior to joining Oxford Brookes University, Lucy was Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education at the University of Hull (2019-2022) and Associate Dean Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Southampton (2017-2019). She has led a number of significant institutional change and improvement projects in all of these roles.

In the new role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Lucy will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of Birkbeck's research strategy and knowledge exchange framework. She will also oversee work to commercialise and maximise the impact of its research.

Lucy is an active researcher whose research interests lie in the fields of television and film, with a specific focus on French cinema in an international context and on remakes.

A professor in Film Studies since 2011, Lucy studied at the universities of Birmingham, Grenoble and Warwick. She completed a PhD on Hollywood remakes of French cinema at Southampton in 1996 and was appointed to the post of Senior Research Fellow in the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Southampton in the same year. Alongside other colleagues, she went on to develop Southampton's film department and film studies curriculum.

Professor Sally Wheeler, Vice-Chancellor said: "I am delighted that we have appointed Professor Lucy Mazdon as Birkbeck's first Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation).

"Lucy will be building on the work of Professor Julian Swann, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, who is stepping back from his role after many successful years developing Birkbeck's research strategy and capacity, and leading a vibrant and diverse research community.

"Her work will help continue to maintain Birkbeck as one of the world's leading research universities, providing research-led teaching to all for whom it is of benefit. It will help to maximise the impact of our research, whilst also focusing on improving the ways in which we share our knowledge and expertise with others and pursuing new commercial research opportunities."

Professor Lucy Mazdon said: "I am really excited to be joining Birkbeck and working with colleagues to further develop and improve the reach, impact and commercialisation of Birkbeck's research and its knowledge exchange functions.
