WHO: Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī Coalition and the UH Mānoa Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge

WHAT: Hawaiian History Month, a month-long celebration honoring Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaiʻi, and promoting the rich cultural heritage and language of the Hawaiian people

WHEN: September 1-30

WHERE: Various locations on Oʻahu, including Kawaiahaʻo Church, ʻIolani Palace, King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, UH Mānoa Kennedy Theatre and online platforms

WHY: Hawaiian History Month is an opportunity to honor Queen Liliʻuokalani and promote cultural awareness through a diverse range of activities, such as music, poetry, theatre, film and panel discussions. The event aims to foster a deeper understanding of Hawaiian history, culture and language while encouraging community engagement and education.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

• September 1:Eō E Liliʻu Concert at Kawaiahaʻo Church - A musical tribute to Queen Liliʻuokalani featuring performances by hālau hula and leading choirs, with an invitation for attendees to sing along.
• September 2: Commemoration of Queen Liliʻuokalani's 186th birthday with a memory walk from St. Andrews to ʻIolani Palace, free tours, theatrical performances, and a short film showcase.
• September 4 and 6:Teaching 1898 panel discussions at the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, exploring the U.S. imperial legacy in Oceania and its impact.
• September 11, 13:Hoʻōla: History of Hawaiian Health event and Holoholo Honolulu trolley tour from Kalihi to Kakaʻako.
• September 19, 20: Talk story session with UH Mānoa director, playwright, and cast of the upcoming UH Hawaiian language hana keaka (production), Puana.
• September 27, 28: World premiere of Puana at Kennedy Theatre.

UH Mānoa is helping organize events for Hawaiian History Month this September, celebrating Queen Liliʻuokalani and the rich culture of Hawaiʻi.

Festivities kick off this Sunday, September 1st with a free tribute concert at Kawaiahaʻo Church. On Monday, the public can also join a memory walk and enjoy free tours at ʻIolani Palace to mark the Queen's birthday.

The month also features panel discussions on Hawaiian history and the premiere of UH Hawaiian language play Puana.
