At #UNGA 79, the EU promotes regional cooperation

Yesterday, among the main highlights of the day in New York, President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a speech during the second meeting of the Ukraine Compact. High Representative Josep Borrell delivered a speech on behalf the EU at the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting. He also addressed the UN Security Council during its emergency meeting on Lebanon. High Representative Borrell and Commissioner Janez Lenarčič co-hosted two events on Sudan, calling for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, a robust humanitarian response as well as the establishment of monitoring mechanisms urging respect of International Humanitarian Law. She also attended the First Ladies Luncheon Roundtable at the 2024 Concordia Annual Summit and participated in a fireside chat on 'The Power of Prevention: Universal Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Strategies' at the Foreign Policy Health Forum.

Commissioner Ylva Johansson delivered an address during the roundtable on safe pathways organised by Pathways International. Commissioner Lenarčič co-chaired together with Belgium a High-level event on the importance of restoring International Humanitarian Law's centrality and universality. Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra delivered a speech at the UN High-level plenary meeting on 'Addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise'. He also participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by Bloomberg on 'Europe's Net Zero Strategy - Delivering on Climate Ambition and Enhancing Industrial Competitiveness,' and in a high-level panel on 'Global Solidarity Levies and Financing for Development.'

Today, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will participate in the informal Ministerial meeting on Venezuela, organised by the US. He will then co-chair an informal Ministerial meeting of EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Foreign Ministers. In the afternoon, the HR/VP will participate in and co-host several meetings focusing on the situation in Gaza and the work towards the implementation of the Two-State solution. He will also participate in the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Ministerial meeting and the Ministerial Meeting of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC). Then, he will co-host the Ministerial meeting on 'The situation in Gaza and the implementation of the Two-State solution as the path to just and comprehensive peace'. Commissioner Kyriakides will be speaking on behalf of the EU at the 2^nd High-level meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which will be live on EbS at around 11:45 EST (17:45 CEST).

Commissioner Didier Reynders will participate in a side event on stopping the destabilising flow of sensitive technology, organised by Ukraine. Commissioner Simson will speak at a panel on the launch event of the Trade and Clean Energy Transition Program, organised by the Centre on Global Energy Policy.
