This week, Mayor Lester Miller proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Macon-Bibb County. He presented the proclamation to staff from Atrium Health Navicent.

The aim of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to inform Americans about breast cancer by advocating for early detection and increasing their awareness about treatment options. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2024, about 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women, leading to about 42,250 deaths.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women and through early detection in the form of mammograms and regular screenings, and new technology available to treat breast cancer patients, an important opportunity exists to unite the citizens of Central Georgia to prevent cancer deaths.
