City of St. Petersburg Prepares for Potential Storm Impacts on Sunday and Monday

Aug. 2, 2024 - As potential storm impacts are expected to approach St. Petersburg through the weekend into next week, the City of St. Petersburg has been making preparations to minimize the impacts of the storm on the community.

In addition to monitoring weather conditions and partially activating a cross-functional virtual Emergency Operations Center for Saturday, Aug. 3, City teams mobilized staff today to prepare for the incoming storm. Updates from various city administrations and departments follow.

Public Works Administration:

  • This morning, the six emergency sandbag distribution locations were opened and will stay open through Saturday, Aug. 3, until 7 p.m. or until weather allows. So far, more than 10,000 sandbags have been distributed.
  • The city's three wastewater treatment facilities have been confirmed to have the capacity to handle the additional rainfall.
  • Construction cranes are being assessed for risk in high rain and winds and are being secured.
  • The water level of lakes are being lowered in anticipation of the additional rainfall.

Police Department and Fire Rescue Department:

  • Storm preparedness protocols are activated.
  • Team members are prepared to deploy after the storm passes to help with relief efforts.

Housing and Neighborhood Services Administration:

  • Codes Compliance Assistance Department and Neighborhood Relations Department staff have been out in neighborhoods assessing the need to secure construction debris.
  • Teams are preparing for debris pickup needs for after the storm.

City Development Administration:

  • Staff is assessing boats at the Municipal Marina for safety and security.
  • The Pier and Sunken Gardens will remain open, pending weather. Market Vendors at the Pier have been informed of the incoming storm and may choose to close for the weekend.
  • Building inspectors are assessing buildings for safety.
  • Message boards have been placed to warn drivers of possible roadway flooding.
  • The South Core Parking Garage is accepting vehicles for residents who want to park their car above street level.

Community Enrichment Administration:

  • Closures are not expected at this time, but may change due to the weather.
  • Water levels at city pools have been lowered in anticipation of the additional rainfall.
  • Parks have been cleaned to minimize post-storm debris.
  • Teams are standing by to handle post-storm debris.
