MARIETTA - On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the Marietta Police Department was named the 2024 recipient of the Dr. Curtis E. McClung / Motorola Award of Excellence by the Georgia Association Chiefs of Police (GACP). This award, which is co-sponsored by the Motorola Corporation, is given to an agency in recognition of an innovative program initiated by a department that fosters law enforcement excellence. MPD was nominated and selected for the "Crisis Intervention K-9 Program (Barney)."

K-9 Barney joined MPD last year and is assigned to School Resource Officer Paul Hill. The team primarily serves in crisis response, providing a calming presence, comfort, and emotional support to help deescalate tense situations at each of the Marietta City Schools. Additionally, the team visits pediatric surgical patients at Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center and assists with mental health-related calls for service.

Chief Beam stated that the award is well-deserved and congratulated everyone with the Marietta Police Department, City of Marietta and Marietta City Schools who had a part in the planning, approval and implementation of the program. He specifically thanked School Resource Officer Paul Hill and K-9 Barney for their steadfast dedication to those they serve on a daily basis.

About the Award: The award is named in honor Dr. Curtis McClung of Columbus, who is credited with bringing Georgia's law enforcement community into the modern era while also assisting the GACP in its pursuit of excellence, especially with respect to management training.
