VCCS Chancellor celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
"I am very pleased that Virginia's Community Colleges have joined organizations across the state and nation who are recognizing the contributions of the Hispanic and Latino community at this time of year," said VCCS Chancellor David Dore. "National Hispanic Heritage Month was established by Congress in 1988 and appreciation continues to grow for the vibrant Hispanic and Latino influence that can be seen in all aspects of Virginia life and culture including the arts, sciences, business, academia, and government."
Enrollments at Virginia's Community Colleges reflect the Commonwealth's diverse population. More than 15 percent of VCCS students are Hispanic.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 to October 15. Many Central American nations celebrate their Independence Days in this time period.
"Hispanic Heritage Month is a powerful reminder of the invaluable contributions Hispanic individuals have made to our nation's culture and economy," said Michel Zajur, a member of the VCCS State Board. Zajur also is President and Founder of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "This is a time to celebrate our diversity and strengthen the bonds that unite us as a vibrant community," he added.
Across Virginia, many of our colleges spotlight their diverse and vibrant communities. Here are just a couple: Patrick & Henry Community College hosted the 5th annual SOVALA regional Latino Festival on campus in September 14 to kick off local Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in the community.
Danville Community College students gathered at their student center and online Sept. 23 to hear a message of empowerment and hope from Reynolds Community College President Paula Pando, who recounted her experience as a proud Chilean American.
"I encourage our colleagues statewide to learn more about Hispanic Heritage month," said Dr. Dore.
