Council look for input as they set out new Vacant and Derelict Land Strategy

Posted on 22 Mar 2023

NORTH Ayrshire Council is stepping up its efforts to address vacant and derelict land.

The local authority has prepared a draft North Ayrshire Vacant and Derelict Land Strategy 2023-2027 - and are looking for feedback from local residents, and businesses to shape the final strategy.

Last year, officers met with stakeholders, businesses and local communities to inform the development of the draft strategy - with all highlighting the negative impact of vacant and derelict land and buildings.

This has informed the draft strategy and a questionnaire, which are now available online.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Economy and Climate Change, said: "We have taken strides to try and help landowners, businesses and residents bring vacant and unkempt land and properties back into positive use.

"We recognise how much of a blight they are on our communities and how keen people are to see these areas improved.

"The purpose of this consultation is to understand if our strategy identifies and proposes actions to address the aspirations and concerns communities and stakeholders have about vacant and derelict land.

"We look forward to hearing from as many people as possible over the coming weeks."

Officers will be at the following locations between 3pm and 7pm to discuss the Strategy in more detail and to provide an opportunity for feedback:

  • Clarke Memorial Church - Annexe Hall, Largs (23 March)
  • Bridgend Community Centre, Kilbirnie (27 March)
  • Rivergate Shopping Centre, Irvine (28 March)
  • Garrison House, Cumbrae (4 April)
  • Saltcoats Town Hall (5 April)
  • Brodick Village Hall, Arran (11 April)

An interactive Storymap has also been produced that details the current sites that are registered by Scottish Government as vacant and derelict that could potentially be regenerated.

The consultation is live until 23 April 2023.

Hard copies of the consultation are available on request and to view at local libraries. Please contact [email protected] to request a copy or with any questions or queries.
