First Severe Case of Bird Flu in a Human in the US

A patient from Louisiana has contracted H5N1 bird flu from their personal, non-commercial flock, according to CNN. The person is over 65 and has underlying medical issues that made them more vulnerable to the virus, and is in critical condition.

The subtype of this virus is D1.1, which was detected in humans in Canada and Washington state. There has been no instance yet of human to human transmission, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) still ranks the risk of this virus spreading as low. They do recommend that backyard poultry farmers, hunters, and other bird enthusiasts who may come into contact with sick or dead infected birds take extra precautions.
