U.S. News Ranks MetroHealth's Rehabilitation Institute Among the Best in Nation

U.S. News & World Report has once again ranked the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute as one of the best in nation for the care of patients recovering from complex conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury and traumatic spinal cord injury.

"It is a great honor to be one of the top 5% of rehabilitation hospitals nationwide," said Richard Wilson, MD, Chair, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). "This demonstrates the dedication and expertise of our rehabilitation team in providing top-level care for those in our community who have disabilities."

U.S. News evaluated rehabilitation care offered at more than 1,000 hospitals. This year, MetroHealth ranked 49th in the nation.

"This accolade is not just a reflection of our state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge treatments but a tribute to the tireless dedication and exceptional skill of our entire MetroHealth team," said MetroHealth President & CEO Airica Steed, Ed.D, RN, MBA, FACHE. "Our physicians, therapists, nurses, support staff and other caregivers pour their hearts into their work each day, driven by a shared passion for transforming lives and fostering hope. Together, we strive to set new standards in healthcare excellence and ensuring that every patient receives the highest quality of care and the opportunity for a brighter future."

When the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute was established in 1953, it was one of only six hospitals in the nation dedicated solely to rehabilitation. Today, it's one of only 18 federally designated Spinal Cord Injury Model System Centers in the nation.

In June, MetroHealth further expanded its outpatient services into the community, bringing top-rated care closer to home for more patients. Adult physical therapy outpatient services are now available at the MetroHealth Broadway Health Center (6835 Broadway Ave., Cleveland). Later this summer, MetroHealth's Bedford Medical Offices (19999 Rockside Road, Bedford) will begin offering outpatient physical therapy for adults as well as outpatient pediatric physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

In 2023, Newsweek also designated the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute as one of our nation's best rehabilitation hospitals, with special mention of the Spinal Cord Injury Program. Also, the Department of PM&R at Case Western Reserve University, based at the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute, has been among the top three PM&R departments in U.S. medical schools for five of the last six years, for the amount of research funding received from the National Institutes of Health.

The MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute is accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for its Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (children/adolescents and adults) and its Comprehensive Vocational Evaluation services (the region's only such CARF-accredited hospital-based program) for another three years, through March 2027. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) is an international, independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services.
