City of Brampton officially opens new Automated Speed Enforcement Processing Centre

BRAMPTON, ON (September 3, 2024) - Today, the City of Brampton announced the official opening of its new Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Processing Centre, solidifying its position as a leader in road safety in Ontario. This milestone marks a pivotal advancement in road safety locally and across the province.​

The investment in the new processing centre is a testament to Brampton's commitment to road safety by adding resources to uphold local traffic by-laws. Through a team of 42 new positions including 30 Enforcement Officers, the ASE Processing Centre will enable the City to process more images, deter speeding and increase road safety. The new centre will significantly strengthen the City's efforts to enforce road safety measures and expedite infraction processing.

Through substantial investment and a bold commitment to community safety, Brampton's ASE Processing Centre is poised to become the leading processing centre in Ontario. Offering processing services to municipalities across the province, the new facility offers a worry-free experience with simplified and faster processing of ASE tickets.

As one of the largest municipal ASE camera programs in Ontario, Brampton is leading the way in creating safer streets with an ambitious plan to deploy 185 ASE cameras by the end of summer 2025. This rapid rollout is substantially faster than those of other municipalities, where deployments of this scale typically take several years.

In July, the City installed 20 additional ASE cameras, building on the 50 cameras already in operation and growing Brampton's ASE camera portfolio to 70 locations. By the end of the year, the City will have installed 100 cameras throughout Community Safety Zones in Brampton and an additional 85 cameras will be installed by the end of summer 2025. The City is partnering with Jenoptik Smart Mobility Solutions to deliver the company's fastest global ASE program deployment in their history.

​​About Brampton's Automated Speed Enforcement Program​

Automated Speed Enforcement is an automated system that uses a camera and a speed measurement device to enforce speed limits. ASE is a proven traffic-calming tool that uses technology to help make roads safer for all users.​

ASE is designed to work in tandem with other road safety measures, such as traffic calming ​, Community Safety Zones​, digital traffic calming signs, education initiatives and police enforcement to help improve safety for people of all ages by:

• increasing speed compliance​
• altering driver behaviour
• increasing public awareness about the critical need to slow down

Statistics on Brampton's ASE program, which supports investments for more cameras and the creation of additional Community Safety Zones, indicate a decrease in vehicular speeds of 6.5 km/h across all ASE camera sites.

Data from Brampton's ASE program also revealed that at Howard Stewart Rd. East of Isle Royal Terrace, an ASE camera captured a driver travelling 93 km/h over the posted speed limit. An ASE camera at Financial Dr., south of Sacramento Rd. captured a vehicle speed of 98 km/h over the posted speed limit. Most alarming, an ASE camera at Main St. S. near Guest St. in downtown Brampton captured a vehicle travelling 126 km/h over the posted speed limit. These speeds are dangerous and demonstrate the need for programs such as ASE to deter excessive speeding in Brampton.

In addition, from 2021-2023, the City issued approximately 81 tickets per day on average or close to 30,000 per year. The average of total fines levied was $3.45 million per year over the same three-year period.

​City of Brampton's commitment to road safety

Brampton is proactively working to protect its residents, reduce traffic-related incidents and create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone in the community. The City has several initiatives in place to help calm traffic and improve the safety for all road users.

In addition to the ASE program, Brampton's traffic calming measures include the Neighbourhood Speed Pilot program, brought forward in response to more than 2,400 service requests about concerns of aggressive driving and speeding on both local residential and neighbourhood streets in 2021 and 2022. The pilot program reduces speeds to 40 km/h in five neighbourhoods across the city identified in speed studies.

​The City has also implemented 187 Community Safety Zones, on the roadway where public safety is of special concern, including near schools, daycare centres, playgrounds, parks, hospitals, senior citizen residences and collision prone areas within a community.

Brampton continues to implement other traffic calming measures including, flashing 40 signs, watch for children signs, pedestrian crosswalks and speed cushions.
