Severe weather forces closure of Riverside Campground

HELENA, Mont. - The Riverside Campground and boat ramp located at Canyon Ferry Reservoir has been closed for the foreseeable future following extensive damage caused by recent severe weather. Strong wind and rains on the night of Sept. 11 caused flooding that was exacerbated by the burn scar from the Horse Gulch Fire earlier this summer. The site sustained significant impacts including damaged infrastructure, pooling water, debris, and unsafe conditions throughout the campground and boat ramp.

Bureau of Reclamation teams have already begun evaluating the extent of the damage. The entirety of the cleanup and restoration process is currently unknown. However, following these assessments the team will be prioritizing this project. Any potential timeline will depend on the extent of the damage, weather conditions, and the availability of resources.

We encourage visitors to consider other campgrounds and boat ramps around Canyon Ferry Reservoir. We appreciate the public's patience as we work to restore the area to a safe condition. Additionally, we encourage the public to monitor Reclamation's website, recreation.gov, and social media platforms for updates on the campground's status and any potential reopening timelines.
