Secretary Blinken’s Meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa and Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken held a trilateral meeting today with Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko and Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul during UNGA High Level-Week.

Secretary Blinken, Foreign Minister Kamikawa, and Foreign Minister Cho reiterated their commitment to institutionalize our trilateral cooperation. They discussed the need for close coordination to respond to deepening military cooperation between the DPRK and Russia, which threatens stability in both Northeast Asia and Europe. They affirmed their strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the maritime domains of the Indo-Pacific.

The Secretary and Foreign Ministers stated their positions on Taiwan remain unchanged and reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of security and prosperity in the international community. They called for the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues.

The Secretary and Foreign Ministers also reflected on the success of our trilateral cooperation at the United Nations Security Council and around the world. They concluded by reaffirming our shared commitment to creating the U.S.-Japan-ROK Trilateral Secretariat, to be finalized by the three leaders when they meet before the end of the year. This step will help institutionalize this crucial partnership into the future.
