Join the ISBA’s “Build the Bar” mentorship program today

Whether you're a new attorney looking for guidance or an experienced lawyer ready to give back, consider joining The Iowa State Bar Association's Build the Bar mentorship program today.

Mentorship may seem simple, but it's a powerful tool that can make all the difference between thriving in a career and simply getting by. For new attorneys and law students entering the legal profession, having a mentor can help bridge the gap between the academic knowledge they've gained and the real-world skills they need. "I have gained insights that have shaped my approach to the law and have provided a roadmap for my career," says ISBA member Hayley Masching who participates in the mentorship program as both a mentor and mentee.

But mentoring isn't just about helping the mentees, it's also highly rewarding for the mentors. Seasoned attorneys have the chance to give back, keep up-to-date on emerging trends, and even gain a fresh perspective on their own practice through the eyes of their mentees. In this mutually beneficial relationship, both mentor and mentee grow together. "All experienced lawyers should be willing to help. Many new lawyers may not have mentors within their firms, or they may prefer an external perspective. We need to step up," says Deborah Petersen.
