MYOB: How ‘Minding Your Own Business’ Really Works

Samuel Bendito do Santos Sarmento at the accounting class provided by SENTRU.

Samuel Bendito do Santos Sarmento is a 26-year-old student from Baucau at the USAID Women and Youth Creating Our Future (WYCF) Sentru Youth Hub in Dili. Despite being in his final year at the National University of East Timor (UNTL) and having language skills in Tetum, Portuguese, and English, his job opportunities were still limited - until he found the WYCF Sentru Youth Hub.

Samuel, after hearing about WYCF through the Institute of Business (IOB)'s Facebook page, enrolled in an accounting course offered by Sentru alongside 279 other students participating in the pilot program at the Youth Hub based in Dili. During this training course, Samuel was able to develop critical accounting skills that have allowed him to propel forward in his career.

"The knowledge and skill I have learned in Accounting - Mind Your Own Business (MYOB) at SENTRU WYCF is incredible. The Accounting course, especially the MYOB application is set for 2 hours a day, from Monday to Friday over four months. The WYCF training course is a structured, organized, and well-planned curriculum led by a very qualified professional trainer. The training module and its sessions allowed me to focus on and learn more practical skills, which I had not had the opportunity to do in my past experience."

The practical, hands-on learning offered through WYCF's Sentru allowed him to leave his job as a Marketing Assistant at the Fundasaun Media Development Center (FMDC) to become a trainer at the Canxigo Training Center. Specifically, Samuel conducts training in accounting, SPSS, English, and Administration alongside 17 other staff members. Because of his time at WYCF Sentru, he was able to develop his personal and professional skills that enhanced his marketability in the workplace. This course gave him the confidence and skills to seamlessly take on a new position. Now, with this new job, Samuel can financially provide for his family.

"After being trained in MYOB application, I immediately enhanced my skills and knowledge on theory and turned it into practice as trainer. I am now able to prepare annual reports based on the real conditions in the field."
