Stop smoking services to receive national funding

Herefordshire is set to benefit from national funding aimed at enhancing local stop smoking services.

Local authorities like Herefordshire Council, that maintain their current stop smoking services, will receive additional funding to expand and reach more people, especially in groups with higher smoking rates. This is part of a government initiative to create a smokefree generation, with £70 million invested annually across England.

The government's plan, announced in October 2023, highlights the harmful effects of smoking and introduces effective measures to help people quit.

Currently, 12.2% of Herefordshire's population smokes, a figure lower than the national average. However, smoking remains a significant factor in life expectancy differences in the county, particularly among routine and manual workers, where smoking rates reach 33.1%.

Councillor Carole Gandy, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing, said:

"The national funding for stop smoking services is a vital step towards a healthier future for Herefordshire. By expanding support, especially for those in high-smoking-rate groups, we're not only helping people quit but also tackling the health inequalities caused by smoking. This funding will enable us to empower more residents to make life-changing decisions for themselves and their families."

With this new funding, Herefordshire Council will increase the number of residents setting quit dates and successfully quitting smoking, moving closer to the government's smokefree target. Plans are already underway to improve support for smokers across the county, including the launch of the 'Swap to Stop' scheme. This initiative will offer free reusable vape starter kits to help smokers switch from cigarettes, contributing to the national goal of helping one million people quit smoking.

Harpal Aujla, Public Health Consultant, said: "Smoking affects many areas of a person's life. Smokers not only die earlier, but they also experience poorer health, such as heart disease and lung cancer, and spend around £2,486 each year on cigarettes. Smoking remains the leading cause of health inequalities in the country. Herefordshire Council is thrilled to receive this grant, which will significantly boost stop smoking services and help more people quit."

If you're ready to stop smoking, free support is available. Local services offer advice, nicotine replacement, and vape starter kits.
