Back to School Safety

With school back in session, the La Grange Police Department is reminding motorists that safety is a collaborative effort where everyone contributes to a safe environment. La Grange police officers will have an increased presence near schools to ensure safety and security. In addition, police officers will conduct traffic enforcement details in various locations throughout the Village to help ensure a safe environment for students as they travel to and from school.

Traffic and pedestrian safety are priorities for the community - please drive, walk, and ride safely and take note of the following tips:

  • Pay attention to what is going on around you; don't let devices distract you.
  • Keep in mind that cell phone use in a school speed zone is prohibited, even if using a hands-free device.
  • Drivers should always yield to pedestrians.
  • Do not block pedestrian crosswalks with your vehicle at any time.
  • Obey school zone speed limits - these are in place to allow time for drivers to react in order to avoid an accident.
  • Drivers must stop for a school bus that is stopped and loading or unloading passengers. Failure to stop for a school bus can result in significant penalties, including license suspension.
