3. Swan Lake Fountain Flows Again After 25 Years; City Revitalizes Historic Neighborhood Landmark

After nearly a quarter century, the Swan Lake fountain at Swan Lake Park is now operational.

Mayor G.T. Bynum and City officials proudly unveiled the newly renovated Swan Lake fountain this morning in Swan Lake Park at 1596 Swan Lake Dr. This landmark project demonstrates the City's commitment to preserving its historical landmarks and enhancing community spaces.

"This renovation is more than just beautification; it's about honoring the history that Swan Lake represents for our community," Mayor G.T. Bynum stated. "We are thrilled to restore this landmark for future generations, ensuring it remains a place for Tulsans to gather for generations to come."

The comprehensive rehabilitation of the Swan Lake fountain is part of broader initiatives under the Improve Our Tulsa (IOT) sales tax programs. The project had a budget of $2.2 million, with $1.7 million allocated from IOT2 and $500,000 from IOT3.

"This has been a long time coming, and so many community members and public servants have advocated and worked to realize the revival of this pond," District 4 Councilor Laura Bellis said. "I look forward to Tulsans strolling around Swan Lake and enjoying this local gem as they've done for decades and decades before."

Construction began in March 2024 and included essential upgrades to both the historical fountain and the water quality of Swan Lake itself. The newly renovated fountain will help aerate the pond, and crews will add two underwater aerators to the west side of the pond to improve water circulation. These additional aerators will reduce algae blooms and increase oxygen levels for aquatic life. Efforts to decrease the population of invasive fish are also underway.

The Swan Lake swing is also included in Tulsa Parks' playground improvement list. Planned enhancements consist of minor upgrades to the existing swing set. If funds permit after the project's completion, meetings will be held with the neighborhood to discuss potential improvements to the fence surrounding Swan Lake.

Anna America, Chief of Culture and Recreation and Parks Director, echoed Mayor Bynum's sentiments: "Swan Lake has always been a place for families and friends to gather. The renovated fountain will elevate the park's ambiance, creating an even more inviting atmosphere for community engagement and enjoyment."

Swan Lake, one of the first suburban developments in Tulsa, has a rich history as a central hub for family gatherings, community events, and recreational activities. The area gained its charming name in the 1920s when swans were introduced to the pond, further enhancing its appeal to residents.

With this renovation, Swan Lake is set to continue its legacy as a cherished gathering spot for Tulsans, showcasing the City's dedication to revitalizing and preserving its historical landmarks.
