The 2024 Conservation Stewards Program comes to Macomb County

Macomb County was recently selected as one of four counties within the State of Michigan to host this year's Michigan Conservation Stewards Program (CSP), an in-depth program which offers the public a unique opportunity to learn about conservation in local natural resources environments. Formed from the partnership of Michigan State University Extension (MSU Extension), Michigan Natural Features Inventory and Michigan Sea Grant, CSP is offered just once per year to individuals age 18+ who are interested in science-based ecosystem management principles.

The 8-week program begins the week of September 9, 2024. It is a hybrid course consisting of both online, self-paced lessons along with weekly meetups on Wednesday evenings at specific locations within Macomb County including Stony Creek Metropark, Wolcott Mill Metropark and the Anchor Bay Woods Preserve.

"We're honored that Macomb County has been selected as a host county for 2024," said Andrew Cox, director of the Macomb County Department of Health and Community Services. "We learned southeast Michigan was being considered as a possible location for the program, so the team at MSU Extension pursued the opportunity and helped secure Macomb County as a host for this unique educational offering."

Along with the online lessons and weekly meetups, the Michigan Conservation Stewards Program also includes two Saturday morning field trips to complement the educational aspect of the program as well as a capstone project related to restoring and conserving Michigan's ecosystems.

"Macomb County's natural resources and shoreline offer an ideal combination of elements to offer this program to local residents" stated MSU Extension District 11 North Director, Kristi Evans, who manages the MSU Extension offices in Macomb and Oakland counties.

The deadline to register for the course is Sunday, August 18, 2024. The course fee is $250 per person, with scholarship opportunities available.
