Niagara University was the host institution for the 31st annual International Vincentian Business Ethics Conference, a gathering of leading academics, business professionals, and young scholars to examine and reflect on current ethical issues affecting businesses, as well as economic, political, and social life. The event, which was held virtually Oct. 24-26, 2024, focused on the theme "Why It Must Be Done: Relighting the Spark of Business Ethics."
Keynote speakers included Scott Bieler, president and CEO of West Herr Automotive Group; Patricia Werhane, professor emerita, former Russin Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and Wicklander Chair in Business Ethics emerita at DePaul University; and Bidhan Parmar, associate dean for faculty development and Shannon G. Smith Bicentennial Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School of Business.
Several Niagara University professors presented at sessions during the two-day conference, which was chaired by Dr. Vince Agnello, Dr. Kris Principe, and Dr. Krieg Tidemann of Niagara University's Holzschuh College of Business Administration.
Dr. Christopher Wright and Dr. Anna McNab presented "Beyond Title IX: Assessing Gender Equity in College Athletics at NCAA DI Non-Football Schools" with former NU professor Dr. Patrick Tutka.
Dr. Arrani Senthinathan presented "Bridging the Gap: Enhancing Business Ethics Curriculum with Healthcare Case Studies."
Dr. Maritza Branker and Dr. Principe presented "Creating Vincentian Business Leaders; Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac Through the Lens of Advocacy Leadership."
Dr. Branker and Dr. Lisa Williams presented "Leveraging the Full Range Leadership Model within Catholic Higher Education to Impact the Loneliness Epidemic."
Dr Fernando Naranjo presented "Strategic Readiness and Ethics for Competence in Lean Healthcare" with Dr. Dave Barrett and Larry Menor from Western University.
Dr. Alexander Bertland presented "The Future of Forced Arbitration and What it Means for Ethical Consumer Relations."
Dr. Shawn Daly presented "The New Digital Divide: Fluency in a Major Chatbot Language" with Rachid Elaasri from the Ecole Normale Supérieure de l'Enseignement Technique Mohammedia.
Alison Romanowski presented "Why You Should Form a Business Ethics Association."
Drs. Principe and Tidemann also moderated a panel of mission directors, which included Rev. Gregory Semeniuk, C.M., from Niagara University; Mark Laboe from DePaul University; and Angela Seegel and Lucy Pesce from St. John's University.
The International Vincentian Business Ethics Conference encourages interdisciplinary inquiry into the social and economic importance of business ethics within the contemporary world. IVBEC is co-facilitated by four Vincentian institutions of higher education: Niagara University, St. John's University, DePaul University, and Dublin City University.
