The City’s first electric waste collection truck is here

Sacramento residents may have noticed a shiny new addition to the City's solid waste collection fleet-though they may not know why the truck is so special.

In August, the Recycling and Solid Waste Division acquired a fully electric side-loader waste collection truck. This new vehicle is the first electric garbage truck in the Recycling and Solid Waste Division's fleet, and supports the City's long-term sustainability goals.

This pioneering purchase was enabled by a grant, which brought down the cost of the electric truck making it comparable to the expense of a regular collection truck.

"Electric side-loaders are extremely new in the industry, and we're excited to test one out on our collection routes," said Jesa David, spokesperson for the division. "You might see it collecting recyclables around town. Keep an eye out for graphics on the electric side-loader that say "100% Electric" and "Leading the Charge."

The new electric vehicle generates zero gas emissions and is quieter than a traditional collection truck. It has been deployed since early September collecting containers on a residential recycling route and transporting the material to the local transfer station for sorting.

Community members can view the electric truck when it debuts at the Clean Air Day Celebrationon Sunday, Sept. 29from 8 a.m. to noon at the Meadowview Certified Farmer's Market (3501 Meadowview Road).

The new truck will also be appearing at the upcoming Highwater Jamboree Flood Preparedness Expoheld at North Natomas Regional Park (2501 New Market Drive) on Saturday, Oct. 19from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be a demonstration by one of the division's "Claw" tractors and a rear-loading truck.
