Own Your Block” Citywide Clean-Up Initiative Calls on Faith Community to Help Reduce Blight and Restore Peace in Memphis

"Own Your Block" Citywide Clean-Up Initiative Calls on Faith Community to Help Reduce Blight and Restore Peace in Memphis

Memphis, Tenn. October 19, 2024. Crews from the City of Memphis partnered with Memphis' Faith Community and residents for a citywide "Own Your Block" clean-up initiative. The initiative aims to inspire pride in local neighborhoods and promote community involvement in maintaining a clean and beautiful environment.

Organized by the City of Memphis and utilizing a coalition of 46 churches and hundreds of volunteers, the initiative invited community members to take an active role in cleaning up their neighborhoods. Teams across the city picked up litter, pulled weeds, mowed overgrown lots, and addressed signs of neglect.

"We are super proud of the faith community and our volunteer and city staffers who got up early on a Saturday to reclaim the neighborhoods they love," said Mayor Paul Young. "I had the opportunity to stop by Oakhaven, Hickory Hill, and South Memphis today, and the energy and enthusiasm for our city is high. Memphis is home to the best people on the planet - I believe it is only right that our streets and neighborhoods reflect that."

In addition to individual neighborhood clean-ups, the City sponsored five mega-site clean-ups in Raleigh, Hickory Hill, Frayser, South Memphis, and Oakhaven. Residents were also encouraged to organize clean-up efforts in their own neighborhoods to take the lead in creating a safer, stronger, and more peaceful community.

The event is part of a broader City of Memphis initiative; the Peace Project is a two-year implementation plan to significantly change the trajectory and better the lives of the people in our city. In year one, the initiative prioritizes restoring visual peace through neighborhood beautification and calls on community faith leaders to help lead the efforts to create a more peaceful city.
