Three charged following unauthorised protests - Newcastle

Three people have been charged following unauthorised protests in Newcastle today.

About 3am on Sunday the 7th of July, police were called to the rail corridor connecting Sandgate and Koorarang Island following reports a person was obstructing trains.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District, Police Rescue and Marine Area Command attended and removed a 29-year-old woman.

About 5.30am, police were called to Port Waratah Coal Services in Kooragang, following reports two people had secured themselves to coal reclaimers and begun disrupting workers.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District and Police Rescue attended and removed the pair - a 22-year-old woman and 22-year-old man.

All three were arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station, where the 29-year-old woman was charged with enter inclosed non-agricultural lands serious safety risk, cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock, and enter inclosed land not presc premises without lawful excuse.

The younger pair were each charged with enter inclosed non-agricultural lands serious safety risk and enter/remain on etc major facility seriously disrupt etc use.

All three were refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Monday 8 July 2024).
