City Hall Enhancements Boost Welcoming Experience

Visitors to Cedar Rapids City Hall may notice recent improvements designed to enhance the welcoming experience, wayfinding, and overall building security.

New, interactive, ADA-compliant kiosks near the First and Second Avenue entrances offer a user-friendly interface, allowing visitors to easily contact offices located in the building and notify staff of their arrival. The kiosks are available in English, Spanish, and Swahili translations - the most common languages spoken in Cedar Rapids.

Refreshed lobby displays now provide real-time weather, payment information, and updates on City services and programming. While face-to-face payments have not been accepted at City Hall since 2022, the treasury drop box - which was temporarily relocated to the Second Avenue entrance during flood control construction - has returned to its permanent location outside of the ADA-accessible First Avenue entrance.

These changes were made as part of a routine review of the City Hall visitor and security experience and reflect the City's ongoing commitment to exceptional customer service while prioritizing visitor and staff safety.

Additional enhanced security protocols at the building include reduced public access to certain areas, limited to scheduled public meetings or by appointment only. This change is a proactive measure to ensure a safer environment for everyone, enabling better monitoring and control of building entry. In general, those visiting City Hall for posted public meetings are unlikely to notice a change. Those visiting on other business are encouraged to check in at a kiosk to notify staff of their arrival. Community members interested in building tours can contact the City Manager's Office for appointments.
